"Acupuncture reduces protein linked to stress in first of its kind animal study". Published online in December 2011 in Experimental Biology and Medicine, researchers from Georgetown Univeristy Medical Center measured levels of neuropeptide Y, a peptide that is secreted by the sympathetic nervous system and consider a marker in chronic stress, in a controlled group study using rats and found that using acupuncture point ST-36 or Zu San Li was able to significantly decrease NPY levels in stressed rats. The study authors report that: “The findings indicate [acupuncture at acupuncture point stomach 36] is effective in preventing one of the sympathetic pathways stimulated during chronic stress, and thus may be a useful adjunct therapy in stress-related disorders.”
